What We Do Minimize

BioGenerator works closely with university technology transfer offices, researchers, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and the investment community to identify promising plant and life science technologies with sufficient potential to form a start-up company.  BioGenerator provides guidance and advice to the university faculty or entrepreneurs about the commercialization process, and working with the entrepreneur/inventor, helps to formulate the business plan.  BioGenerator will also provide capital (seed funding) averaging between $50,000- $250,000 over an 18 month funding period to support start-up and commercial proof-of-concept activities.  In some instances, BioGenerator will also provide management support during the initial company formation, as well as assistance in attracting side-by-side or follow-on funding.

Eric Gulve, PhD. Minimize

Dr. Gulve joined BioGenerator in 2007 following a 14 year career in the pharmaceutical industry. His initial responsibilities at BioGenerator were as Vice-President with responsibilities for expanding outreach to universities, increasing the number of technologies reviewed by BioGenerator, driving technical aspects of evaluation and due diligence, and leverage his industry experience in order to shepherd technologies to the point of commercial feasibility. In April 2007 he assumed day-to-day oversight of BioGenerator. His responsibilities have expanded to include organizational leadership and overall strategic direction, community outreach, and oversight of BioGenerator portfolio companies. Dr. Gulve currently sits on the Board of Directors of five portfolio companies.

Prior to joining BioGenerator, Dr. Gulve spent 14 years in the pharmaceutical industry focused on drug discovery research. From 2003 – 2007 he held various roles in local and global leadership teams in Cardiovascular research at Pfizer, and led laboratories working in the areas of thrombosis, hypertension, and metabolic disease. From 2000 – 2003, Dr. Gulve was Associate Director of the Cardiovascular & Metabolic Diseases research group at Pharmacia Corporation, prior to Pharmacia’s acquisition by Pfizer. From 1994 – 2000 he directed laboratory groups and served on leadership teams within G.D. Searle’s Cardiovascular drug discovery research group, where he played a key role in initiating and leading the company’s first diabetes research program. In addition to laboratory oversight and roles on therapeutic area discovery research leadership teams, Dr. Gulve held a number of other leadership roles, e.g. drug discovery teams and new drug target identification/validation teams. In all three companies he held various roles on cardiovascular and metabolic disease therapeutic area in-licensing teams, including mining for licensing opportunities, participation on due diligence teams, as Discovery representative in discussions with potential external partners, and on cross-functional licensing leadership teams. Dr. Gulve has extensive experience working collaboratively across different research lines, therapeutics areas, business units, and geographic sites, as well as experience in large-scale collaborations between industry and academic scientists. Over the course of his career he has supervised a significant number of Ph.D., M.S. and B.A. scientists working in his laboratories, and has mentored more junior colleagues working inside and outside of his laboratories.

Dr. Gulve received an A.B. in Chemistry from Occidental College (Los Angeles) and a Ph.D. in Physiology from Harvard University. He served as a post-doctoral fellow and subsequently on the research faculty at Washington University School of Medicine, where his research focused on skeletal muscle metabolism and the molecular mechanisms which contribute to the beneficial effects of exercise in diabetes and other states characterized by defective glucose metabolism. He has worked directly or overseen the work of direct reports in a number of different fields including skeletal muscle carbohydrate and protein metabolism, diabetes, thrombosis, and hypertension. Dr. Gulve has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles and has contributed to several book chapters and review articles. He continues to lecture periodically on the subjects of skeletal muscle metabolism, diabetes, and muscle protein turnover.
